Suffering injuries and other losses as a result of a road traffic accident that was not your fault is stressful. It is even more stressful when the other driver involved either disappeared from the scene without providing their insurance details or it subsequently transpires that the driver responsible was not insured.
In these circumstances, assistance is available from the Motor Insurers Bureau. The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) is a non-profit organisation established by the Government in the mid-1940s to assist motorists and victims of road traffic accidents which have been caused by the negligence of uninsured or untraced drivers.
“The MIB is funded by insurance companies who pay into this fund for the sole purpose of compensating such victims.”
These types of claims are more complicated than when insurance companies are involved. Instead, applications are made to the Motor Insurers Bureau who carry out investigations on the victim’s behalf.
If you have been involved in either a “hit and run” accident or where the driver is uninsured, it is important to seek legal advice as soon as possible as the procedure is more complicated in cases where the MIB is involved.
You should be aware that one problem with the MIB dealing with a “hit and run” application is that they do not pay your legal fees but instead only make a contribution towards them. For this reason, we charge a fee equal to 25% of any compensation awarded.
