What is Breast Augmentation (Implants), Breast Reduction or Breast Uplift Surgery?
A “boob job” is now the number one cosmetic procedure in the UK. Breast augmentation can also be known as breast implant surgery or breast enlargement surgery.
- Augmentation involves the insertion of implants to alter the size, form, shape and look/feel of breasts.
- Reduction is an operation to reduce the weight and volume of breasts.
- Uplift surgery involves an uplift and reshapes of the breasts.
Even the scandal of substandard PIP implants nor the horror stories of surgery undertaken abroad has done little to impact the number of breast augmentations, which has seen a massive global rise in popularity.
With the lack of statutory regulation and standards of practice in the industry, this is a breeding ground for substandard procedures and, as with any medical procedure, things can go wrong.

Common Causes of Breast Implant Claims
There are a significant number of complications that may arise during or after breast augmentation surgery. The most common are recognised risks but, depending upon how these complications are managed, there may be medical negligence.
- Capsular contracture
Capsular contracture is the most common complication that occurs with breast augmentation. At the time of augmentation surgery, a pocket is made under the breast for the implant. A thin layer of tissue will form around the implant. This is called the capsule and it happens around any implanted material. It is common for this tissue to thicken at some point after the surgery and create a “capsular contracture”.
The vast majority of people who have breast augmentation surgery, this may cause a slight increase in the firmness of the implant. In other cases, the capsule will tighten, resulting in the breast feeling hard in parts and altering the appearance of the implant. This problem carries a risk of infection. - Rupture/Siliconomas
Rupture is caused by the splitting or tearing of an implant. If you have silicone implants this can lead to the leaking of silicone into the beast and may cause a further complication known as a Siliconoma. Siliconomas are characterised by small lumps in the breast which can cause significant pain, and which can mimic the signs of breast cancer. The majority of patients will develop a painless mass but for some this can be a very painful and frightening experience. - Infection and bleeding
The risk of infection and bleeding is relatively rare in breast augmentation cases but if you have an implant following a mastectomy, you may have a greater risk of infection and bleeding. - Incorrect Implants Used
Less commonly the wrong sized implants are used resulting in no increase in the breast size or the desired (and contracted) outcome is not achieved. This means that the patient has accepted all the risks of the augmentation surgery occur, but the desired result is not achieved.
